Often seen as the overarching objective of the Millennium Development Goals, progress towards achieving MDG 1 – eradicate extreme hunger and poverty – was hit by first the food crisis in 2008, which saw commodity prices surge upwards, and secondly by the financial crisis, which dampened growth across developing markets and sent developed economies into recession.
